Dallas Police Chase, Fatally Shoot Suspect with Handcuffed Woman
Dallas police fatally shot a convicted sex offender over the weekend after exchanging gunfire with officers and leading them on a chase in a stolen vehicle with a woman handcuffed to a seatbelt.
The incident happened shortly after midnight Sunday when officers confronted Michael Shirley, who began shooting at them, KDFW-TV reports. The 55-year-old convicted sex offender got into a stolen vehicle and sped away.
Police pursued Shirley, and the chase, which was captured on an officer's dashboard camera, ended when the suspect crashed and flipped his vehicle.
Shirley shot at police again after the crash, and the officers returned fire. A body-worn camera recorded the ensuing shootout, and Shirley was killed in the exchange.
No officers were injured during the incident, but a cruiser was stuck twice by shots.
Officers found an uninjured woman handcuffed inside the stolen vehicle. She told police she had voluntarily entered the car, but it's unclear how she became handcuffed.
According to police, the vehicle had been stolen in an aggravated robbery in Garland. Shirley, who was imprisoned for eight years for indecency with a child, was wanted on active arrest warrants, and Police Chief Eddie Garcia praised how his officers handled the situation.
"It is much, much more violent for my officers and officers across the country, but my officers are undeterred," Garcia said at a news conference.
